Can AI Ever Understand Human Emotion?

In the age of large language models, voice analysis, and affective computing, the idea of a machine that “understands” human emotion doesn’t sound like science fiction anymore. Mental health startups are already building chatbots that listen, analyze tone, reflect feelings, and even offer coping suggestions.

But if you’ve ever been in therapy, you know that what makes it powerful isn’t just what’s said, it’s how it’s said, when it’s said, and the human being saying it.

So here’s the question: Can AI ever truly understand human emotion, and if not, what role should it play in therapy’s future?

What AI Can Do Well (Surprisingly Well, in Some Cases)

But we should be cautious of turning mental health into an app store category. Therapeutic work is sacred. AI should be a tool, not a substitute, for that depth of human connection.
